The swine industries of the world are very dynamic and continue to evolve and change along with the external forces that shape agriculture world-wide. The factors influencing change are generally related to economic efficiency and competition from alternative protein sources. The global trend is for fewer producers, responsible for larger numbers of pigs, and more concentration within the swine industry. The ability to maintain economic viability is a function of providing optimal facilities, genetics, nutrition, and health programs to the pig in a system that addresses cost of production and generating revenue from the marketing of a high-quality product.
Swine production in the 21st century has become quite sophisticated. Many pork producers have transitioned away from raising purebred pigs for food and instead are raising crossbred pigs carefully selected for a specific need. These systems involve purposeful selection of the grandparent animals that usually selected with a maternal or terminal emphasis in composite breeding programs that emphasize the benefits of breed complimenting. The resulting offspring are called parent stock which are then bred to produce crossbred terminal animals.
Helping swine producers reduce costs and remain profitable is at the heart of Kansas State University’s Swine Day program planned for Thursday, Nov. 17.
Swine Day 2016 will kick off with a technology trade show that opens at 8 a.m. at the K-State Alumni Center, 17th and Anderson Ave., in Manhattan. The program begins at 9:30 a.m. and includes lunch. The day wraps up with a reception at 4 p.m. featuring K-State Call Hall Ice...
Government has gazetted six communal areas in Mount Darwin district of Mashonaland Central province in which movement of pigs has been banned as it battles to control an outbreak of African swine fever. The deadly livestock disease, which has no cure or vaccine, has killed more than 600 pigs in the district since last year, according to official statistics, and it is feared that it could affect large swathes of the region unless measures are immediately taken to combat its spread. The six...

It does not need a scientist to tell that in each developing business, one needs a mentor. And of course a mentor will be someone who has been in the same field you are interested in, who has been practising for most of his/her business life. In farming for example, it would be expected of a commercial farmer to assisting with the mentoring of the developing farmers. And this has proven to be true in cases of grain, beef, fruits and other fields, but not as easy in the pig industry.
For...
I would like to write about some things that I believe are so simple, and yet so profound, that I believe they all affect the profitability of all Hog Production. In short I believe that we always have to take care of the “Basics” first, and foremost! In my mind the basics are these eight areas. Any service, or any product sold to you to increase your profitability, can be placed in one of these eight categories: (1)...
Introduction In the past few decades, the American pig industry has seen a steady increase in market weights. This trend is driven by economic factors at the packing plant, where fixed costs can be allocated over more pounds of pork sold per pig, and at the farm, where sow and other fixed costs can be spread over more pounds of pork sold. Unfortunately, there is very little empirical data explaining the changes in growth rate, feed intake, energy...
Our thanks to the author and Conference Organisers, a Committee consisting of both University and Industry colleagues. The full paper will appear in the Conference Proceedings ('Recent Advances in Animal Nutrition - 2007', edited by Phil Garnsworthy and Julian Wiseman) published by Nottingham University Press in the autumn of 2007 www.nup.com ...
INTRODUCTION Currently, a method to increase growth, improve feed efficiency, and increase leanness is incorporation of ractopamine hydrochloride (RAC; Paylean, Elanco Animal Health, Greenfield, IN) into the diet of finishing pigs for the last 20.4 to 40.8 kg of BW gain. Numerous studies have reported these benefits as well as increased carcass weight and dressing percentage with...
I'm student with little prospect for formal employment and i have started a process of forming an agricultural cooperative, focusing on vegitable production, poultry and piggery. I have access to a small landholding which is enough for the project and also to some famr machinery such irrigation pump, tractor and a Bakkie, but all are not in a working condition. Can any one please assist me in developing a business plan and also to where i can source funding for the project. Thank you...
BACKGROUND
In the last five years the economic pressure on hog producers has varied between mild and intense. There have been only a few months when the average returns for producers have been positive. Of course, there is wide variation in the cost of production among producers but very few have been profitable on the hog portions of their farm businesses. Additionally, the returns in the packing sector have been declining as...
ABSTRACT
A series of non-technological factors such as the prevailing climate, water availability, land availability, density of pigs per area and cost of labor favored Brazil in the competitive landscape of pork production. Among technological factors we can cite the chain organization, which is growing, changes in the type of production, knowledge acquired and adopted, productivity of the grains that are raw materials, genetics...
I was wondering what the next 5 to 10 years will look like for the World’s Hog Industry? As a Hog Producer, University Researcher, Businessman or Student, what is your greatest concern? Are Feed Costs your main concern? How about locating and keeping good workers? Do you worry about being big enough that the Packing Plants will have Shackle Space for the amount of hogs that you market each week? What about keeping free of diseases? Is getting the needed...

(1) Can boars determine the number of piglets and if so how? (2) How long should it be between piglets arriving during farrowing? (3) What is the average weight of a piglet born? (4) How many hours does it take for the piglet to become aware of there surroundings? (5) How long does it take piglets to get to know their mum and her grunt.? (6) How many hours in a day do new borne piglets sleep? (7) How does a sow get them on to solid feed at 10 days and how does she know when to do...
We have a litter of 28-day piglets in our farm. What is the average weight for them? Is 15 kg. a good number? Thanks for the information you may come along with. ...
Long-term trends show productivity continues to improve in the U.S. swine industry. "We've continued to get better at producing more pigs per sow, more pounds of pork per pig born, and we do that with less feed, with less health treatment, just through better management, better genetics," said Tim Safranski, University of Missouri associate professor and state swine breeding specialist. "We have more pork even without increasing the number of farmers...
INTRODUCTION In the early 1980´s, I co-authored an undergraduate Farm Management text with the title: "Farm Business Management: Successful Decisions in a Changing Environment"; if I only knew! To say we are now in a period of rapid change and it will continue is nothing short of a tautology. Humanity, however, is facing some very serious questions about global sustainability as the world transitions out of the...
