True Ileal Calcium Digestibility in Soybean Meal and Canola Meal, without and with Microbial Phytase, for Broiler Starter and Finisher

Published: June 9, 2023
Summary
Soybean meal (SBM) and canola meal (CM) are two plant-based protein sources which contain reasonable amounts (2.9 and 6.8 g/kg, respectively) of calcium (Ca). Currently, no published values are available for the Ca digestibility in SBM and limited studies (Anwar et al., 2018; Moss et al., 2018) are available for the Ca digestibility in CM. Microbial phytases are now routinely added in poultry die...

The study is of interest as a fact finding. However, when explaining the results, it should be taken into account that any mineral salts are not digested before absorption, must be dissolved and ionized. Then the citations must first dissolve in an acidic medium, and then the phytic acid anions are hydrolyzed by phytases (digestion).
That is, the adsorption of calcium from minerals and phosphorus from phytates is preceded by fundamentally different processes, which should be taken into account when explaining the results obtained
