Spring has come to stay for a few months, everything is getting greener, and the environment is recovering from the harsh cold, but as optimistic as we are, we find spring to be a great moment for raising awareness of poultry’s most common diseases.
Want to know some of them?
1. Coccidiosis
Represented in poultry mainly by Eimeria spp., which may cause severe gastrointestinal signs like diarrhea and sub-optimal growth, especially in younglings. Older birds who are not showing symptoms can still shed coccidian eggs in their faeces, so stay aware!
2. Newcastle disease
This viral disorder is considered one of the most significant diseases in the poultry world. Virulent strains are present all over the world (Paramyxovirus type 1), wreaking havoc whenever an outbreak starts. Clinical signs are usually respiratory, but neurological signs can be appreciated as well.
3. Avian influenza (HPAI)
Contemplated by some researchers as the most important poultry disease, it is considered dangerous also to humans, as it has high zoonotic potential. Common signs range from respiratory disorders to a drop in egg production. Remember to keep waterfowl away from your farms, as they are the primary reservoir.
