Use of Plant Extracts Rich in Tannic Acid and Polyphenols as Enhancing Agents of Poultry Intestinal Quality

Published: June 8, 2016
Summary
Several broiler producing countries have banned the use of Antibiotic Growth Promoters (AGPs) related to the risk of cross-resistance development in human pathogens. Removal of AGPs from animal diets involves tremendous pressure on poultry farmers. One of the main consequences is a substantial increase in the incidences of infectious diseases, with an associated rise in antibiotic use for therap...

Dear Friends, I ve reading several comments over tannins and its effects. And was well described by Dr. Lancini. Just want to point some inputs. What we learn on antintrutional effects, its true, but it depends on how it is associated in the plant, witch plant we are referring and also the dose. Tannins, I see as an entity , divided and chemically classified. The major groups are condensed, and hydrolisable, and under this major groups there are several chemical structures that are defined. Those structures or characteristics, depends on what type o plant we are dealing with. For example, Quebracho, mainly condensed tannins, the major component of are Tannic acid from the group of profitestidins , and sorghum also a condensed group are proacinidins. On the other side, the chestnut are hydrolizable tannins, the main composition are gallo-ellalics. Just Quebracho, the profitestidins compounds form more them 50 chemical structures. Other plants, we know that, depending on the way the structures are formed and witch constituents, it may be toxical. Several review have demonstrate the potential on tannins extract on animal nutritions, mono gastric or ruminants. i can point some as: Unravelling the conundrum of tannins in animal nutrition and health, J Sci Food Agric 86:2010–2037 (2006) and Exploitation of dietary tannins to improve rumen metabolism and ruminant nutrition. JSciFoodAgric2011;91:24–37. It is important also, that we know that , for example, we deal with "tannins extract" witch is bioactive, the is not extract, like in sorghum, it is protecting the protein from degradation or digestibility. So, we may be ineffective most of the time trying to feed plants with high tannins, it need to be extracted. The mechanism of action on bacterial, it is mostly associated with forming complexes with cell was protein and enzymes, but also to some metal that the cells use to their regular metabolism, as iron. Other benefits of tannins on animal nutrition, and again it is dependent on the plant and also the dosage, are antioxidant effects, flavoring (in low doses stimulates dry matter intake), astringency, etc.etc..Also it is being applied on human health as anti carcinogenic, anti diabetes, anti-cholesterolemic , and others... The knowledge over tannins, and its beneficial influences on animal production and human health had being largely studied on the past 15 years.

Mr.MarceloManela- Surprisingly you are harping on the same cord what Dr.Lancini has left.Your statement looks lacking in clarity. You said major variety of tannins are condensed and hydrolysable. It is to reitarate that Ruminants had some capacity to mobilize tannins in plant due to the content of microbial enzymes which are absent in poultry and other non-ruminants.You had equally endorsed that the process to detanification prior to its utilization would be in demand. You had also asserted that tannic acid causes greater peristaltic movement to enable nutrients less exposure to intestinal lumen for facing enzymatic activity and then utilization. You are therefore requested to cater trial report on same as I had put emphasis since beginning.

Plant Extracts are nothing but Natural Products from Nature. Plant extracts are derived from Nature which are harmless and Echo free without any residues. India use Plant extracts from more than 5000 years ago particularly from three Fruits collected from Forest as Medicine to cure any ailments. The fruits are Terminalia Chebula, Emblica, and Chebulic myrobalans. These fruits contain Tannic Acid, Polyphenols and Citric Acid with minerals and vitamins. After the entry of Synthetic Medicines people forgot these fruits. But still in India the powder known as Triphala is famous. The same can be adopted for Cattle, Poultry and Piggery.

Broiler producers are not missing antibiotic growth promoters. The annual genetic improvement by breeders all in all out rearing and improved biosecurity is helping a lot. Broiler flocks do get into problems due to slips in management protocols.
these are being exploited by quacks who suggest plant extractions and plant products as a whole.
In india turmeric and garlic are being used directly in feed. some companies have commercialised them.
This is quackery.
we do not know the active ingredient in it.
we have not researched on the dosage evaluating the safety, potency and the side effects.
handling of these things are not hygienic. small farmers carry them in used sacs, grind it some way mix it in some quantity (nobody knows how much) and expect it to work. Some companies are trying to give legitimacy by conducting field trials. nobody publishes the trials which yield poor results. some positive results appear randomly and they are highlighted.
I personally feel that these things were used few thousand years ago due to lack of alternatives.
It is better that the scientific and knowledgeable society work on the active ingredient, potency and safety.

Dr.Talapaneni.Kotaiah Sir, your idea of using Turmeric and Garlic by Indians in Older days is Correct for some years. Why don't you all now a days try with the late available Technology about Turmeric and Garlic. Globally everybody is trying Patents on Turmeric. I request you all to try in Labs which Natural extracts are able control disease causing bacteria and let people use with an understanding.

Please enlighten me on the active ingredient in turmeric and garlic. How much active ingredient is available in one 1gm or kilo of raw material. At what dose it is preventing the bacterial growth and at what dose it is killing 100%?
Which lab tests these facts? I will follow up.

Do we have any experimental data on broilers and layers to substantially proof our claim with regards to performance, FCR and mortality?
