Metabolic Bone Disorder. Cage Layer Osteoporosis

Published: March 16, 2011
Summary
Osteoporosis (Caged Layer Fatigue) is a condition which manifests itself in several clinical signs. There is leg weakness and sometime paralysis. Affected birds are unable to stand and usually to move to the back area of the cage. They often fall onto their sides with leg outstretched. Birds which live for several days after going down may dehydrated or emaciate and are out of production. Altho...

yes, the article is very good and informative. But the poultry person should know if the birds layers showing osteoperosis or cage layer fattique etc only due to nutritional status or nutritional containts. Normally there is quality of ingradients are essential as poor quality of any ingradients may lead to confusion for the producers. I feel standards are well documentated and prooved but how to identify the cause of such problem when feed formulation is ok that is the point for techncial consultants.

I mean besides verious nutritional points i would verify the health condition as most of the layers show wet litter many time which demand control. How to control diarrhea and wet pits which is a indicater for nutritient losses? One by one cross check is essential which induces wet pit in cage layer both broiler and layers breeders and commercial layers. any factor which interfer with the metabolisim and disgestion process or create unfavaourable gut status it will induce wet pit through diarrhea and leading to stress on bird and untillze of nutrients may be ca, av phospherous etc and electrolytes etc even major componate like protien and others. Let us simulteneously have the power to recheck all for control of osteoperosis which is mearly a metabolic problem for not finding the biological levels of nutrients and mostly supported by adverce managemental positions of the shed or facilities or cost saving attitude.

I am thankful to the writer for stimulating me to send the comment over such beautiful article.

A very good article that explains all details of cage layer Osteoporosis or cage layer fatigue. This is quite a common issue in normal flocks, you may find 2 to 3 birds in a week with symptoms of cage layer fatigue. Generally, it is not a flock issue but individual birds show symptoms.

For me, solution is simple, remove the affected bird from the cage, place it on the floor for a week and 95% birds recovers and now you can place them back in the cage. Bird will have her exercise, strengthen her muscles, have easy access to feed and water that helps her to be normal.

If there is nutritional issue or weight issue then production manager (feed and farm) should be fired.
