DDGS in poultry nutrition

The majority of by-products produced by the dry-grind ethanol industry are dried distillers grains with soluble. The DDGS from different sources like corn, rice, wheat, sorghum are highly useful for livestock and poultry. Among that corn DDGS is an excellent feed ingredient for use in layer, broiler, duck and turkey diets and contains approximately 85% of the energy value in corn, has moderate levels of protein and essential amino acids, and is high in available phosphorus. With growing demand for food and scarce resources, the animal livestock industry doesn’t have the luxury of letting anything go to waste. Corn by-products (DDGS) from the ethanol industry are considered to be waste, but can still have a use as a feed ingredient. Because it is considered a waste product it is a very cheap source of crude protein, crude fibre, available phosphorous, unsaturated fatty acids and essential amino acids. It is an effective replacer of soya and corn in the poultry diet with the added benefit that it reduces feed costs.
Luke Adam (Beam Suntory) discussed the differences and characteristics of DDGS produced by the beverage industry, during the 22nd Annual Distillers Grains Symposium in Des Moines, Iowa....

Introduction Distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) are by-products obtained during production of biofuels as renewable energy sources. During starch fermentation from cereal grains, ethanol and CO2 are produced; meanwhile, the remaining nutrients are concentrated in the DDGS fraction (Singh et al., 2005). Corn is the main cereal used in ethanol production in the United States; however, other grains such as wheat, barley, and sorghum are utilized in different regions of...

After fermentation, ethanol is separated by distillation while the water and non-fermentable materials (known as whole stillage) are decanted or centrifuged which results in wet cake (e.g., removed suspended solids) and soluble solid-laden water (i.e., thin stillage). Evaporation of the thin stillage produces condensed distillers solubles (known as CDS) which can then mixed into the wet cake, and then dried to produce a variety of coproducts. These coproducts are broadly known as...

Introduction Legislatures such as The Renewable Fuel Standard in the U.S.A. and The Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation in the U.K. have driven massive increases in bioethanol production from cereal (first-generation bioethanol). In 2011, the estimated global production was around 113 billion liters (OECD-FAO Agricultural Outlook 2012-2021). The rising volume of bioethanol production also results in increasing quantities of the current coproduct, distiller’s dried grains...

The world grain price is increasing day by day and the industry is facing several challenges to produce good quality animal products with reasonable price for consumers. Similarly, poultry industry in Bangladesh is also fighting with this high grain price to maintain their production with marginal profit. Small and medium poultry farm owners are mainly affected and losing their capitals investment in this sector. The increased cost and the limited supply of...

INTRODUCTION Dried distillers grain with solubles (DDGS) is a commercial residual by-product of ethanol industry from grains (corn, wheat, sorghum etc.). Due to high nutrient content (protein 28-30%), it can be used as an alternative feed source especially in poultry and other domestic animals (20, 23, 31). As a feed component, there are some studies focused on the effectiveness of DDGS on broiler diets (4, 13, 36, 41, 42, 46). However, the inclusion ratio of DDGS and their...

Use of DDGS in poultry and other animal feeds can reduce feed cost. It is 28 available protein. It is cheaper than soyabean meal and fish meal proteins. We can formulate this cheap source of protein to control cost of production of eggs, which is needed in todays world. It can also contribute to add other micro nutrients like Ca,P,Mg,k,Na,S, Fe etc.Farmers can add upto 1520 in feed. It increases palatability and provides granular appearance to feed which especially birds prefers. Any toxin...

Introduction Distillers Dried Grains With Solubles Byproducts of the distilling industry such as distillers dried grains and distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) have long been commonly accepted feed ingredients in broiler diets. Early studies have been extensively reviewed by Scott (1965, 1970). Due to their supply and price, these products were typically fed at levels not exceeding 5% of the...
