Innovative additives against a pathogen that is well-known but a great trouble to the swine industry.

Infections related to Streptococcus suisare an endemic problem characterized by meningitis, arthritis and mortality after piglets weaning. Even though streptococcal disease is complex, there are two main colonization routes described for this pathogen which are: the respiratory system, and the gastrointestinal tract.

For this reason, at Liptosa we have developed a solution that approaches both routes: the new Hygen Pro Strept Advance. Its composition is based on medium chain fatty acids along with monoglycerides, being reinforced with essential oils and botanical extracts such as mint and eucalyptus. These plants have well recognized beneficial effects on the respiratory system. Every single ingredient favours the development of saprophytic microbiota, reducing the risk of disease and the need for antibiotic treatment.

Thymus vulgaris is a flowering plant of the Lamiaceae family commonly known as thyme, native to southern Europe and with a worldwide distribution. It is native to the Mediterranean, North Africa, and parts of Asia. In Africa, the plant has been cultivated in Egypt, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Cameroon, Nigeria, and South Africa.

Traditionally, thyme has been used for many centuries as a flavouring agent, medicinal herb and culinary ingredient.

Currently, its applications are based on the following characteristics:

1. Antispasmodic and expectorant activity: relaxing the muscles, it helps reduce coughing and contributes to an easier release of bronchial secretions.

2. Antiseptic effects: this effect has been observed against Gram-positive bacteria (Streptococcus suis), Gram-negative bacteria (Salmonella spp.) and fungi (Candida albicans).

3. Anti-inflammatory properties: for this reason, the essence of thyme is included in preparations for muscular and osteoarticular pain.

4. Others: it also has activity as an antioxidant, immunostimulant, hormonal regulator and is used to assist in the digestion process.

All these benefits are attributed to the composition of thyme. The main bioactive component of T. vulgaris is the essential oil, which is composed of 20%-54% thymol and carvacrol (Porte and Godoy, 2008). It also contains polyphenols (in particular flavonoids) and other components such as phenolic acids and tannins, among others.

Ketosis is a metabolic state which starts when the body has a deficit in carbohydrate intake and its main energy source is the fat tissue. This situation involves the animal producing ketone bodies to obtain energy. Nevertheless, when production is greater than consumption, animal enter a situation of ketoacidosis which is a veterinary emergency. This disorder can appear in cattle and pigs because of a high glucose demand while the animal's ingestion capacity decreases: at the end of the gestation as well as beginning of lactation periods. Animals enter a negative energy balance, significantly reducing their productive capacity. Sometimes, subclinical ketosis generates a reduction in animals’ productivity that is relatively difficult to appreciate, without a detailed record of production data. In the long term, these subclinical processes are the ones that generate the greatest economic losses.
