An increase in the velocity of air, at a temperature lower than the surface temperature of the animal, has the potential to increase the sensible heat loss of the animal. An augmentation in air velocity will shift the upper critical temperature upwards. An effective ventilation system to reduce heat stress should emphasize the production of high air speed as much as the commonly accepted goal of r ...

Lorenzo Quesnel have you checked the THI ? air speed ? You should know that Milking parlour is one of the most sensitive and neglected are when it comes to heat stress.

Jean Vincent Bioret I am planning and designing my next research about how behaviour and comfort reacts against two different stalls materials having two different types of bedding material in this case we can work together .

I wonder how those (cooling) mattresses are going to be washed and dried. A potential source of mastitis. Yes, radiation heat can be easily reduced by blocking direct / indirect sunlight. During the hot hours (4 to 6 hours) a wet sack put over the body can greatly enhance cooling by way of evaporation. These sacks can then be dried outside.

Jean Vincent Bioret, do you think farms where we already have 40ºC plus temperature your beds can work and protect cows from heat stress? There is a huge difference between France and Middle East or south East Asian countries' weather conditions. We did try water bed at University of Wisconsin and next day we stop the whole experiment because of too much heat accumulation... There is no compa ...

Richard Stephens Dear Richard, sorry to say, but your words show that you don't really know what is a cow in heat stress! Of course, the best is to produce in an environment where temperature is below 25 C. But what to do, most of us experience 4-6 months a year when temperatures are above this threshold, sometimes 24 hours a day! In this case, barn design, clean water and even forced ventilation ...
