Poultry management usually refers to the husbandry practices or production techniques that help to maximize the efficiency of production. Sound management practices are very essential to optimize production. Scientific poultry management aims at maximizing returns with minimum investment. A carefully controlled environment that avoids crowding, chilling, overheating, or frightening is almost universal in poultry farming. Cannibalism, which expresses itself as toe picking, feather picking, and tail picking, is controlled by debeaking at one day of age and by other management practices. The feeding, watering, egg gathering, and cleaning operations are highly mechanized. Birds are usually housed in wire cages with two or three animals per cage, depending on the species and breed, and three or four tiers of cages superposed to save space. Cages for egg-laying birds have been found to increase production, lower mortality, reduce cannibalism, lower feeding requirements, reduce diseases and parasites, improve culling, and reduce both space and labour requirements.
In August 2013, the world’s poultry veterinarians and poultry health scientists will be holding their global conference in Nantes, France. The conference, known as WVPAC2013 is being hosted by the French Branch of the World Veterinary Poultry Association which globally has well over 2000 members and branches in some 40 countries. In Nantes, poultry health professionals will be updated on developments in poultry health and will network with colleagues and...
To meet processors’ demands, you need to get your broilers into the factory on the pre-programmed day, close to target weight. Factories are now getting more precise as to what they want growers to achieve. On farm weighing helps you to meet these requirements. There are two types of weighings A) Spot...
A major component of broiler management is maintaining good litter quality throughout the flock. Litter quality is negatively influenced by moisture. As litter moisture increases, litter quality decreases. Factors that affect litter moisture include drinker management, bird health, bird density, ventilation rates, litter depth and litter type. Typically broiler facilities are bedded with materials that have moisture content less than 10%. Under...
According to researchers at The University of Sydney, free-range broilers and layers are less efficient converters of feed into saleable meat and eggs, and generally have higher mortality than conventionally-reared poultry. In broilers, the performance gap has been quantified as a 10-12 point increase in Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR). This does not consider the intake, by some birds, of dry matter (DM) from the range, and a 2-3% increase in mortality in free-range...
Present day, broiler farming has become as much expensive as it has never been though. In countries like Pakistan majority of the broiler farmers are no more capable of continuing their broiler farming, due to increasing costs of farm operations, like feed, medicine, sudden rise in chicks rate, electricity, litter, brooding, etc....

Definition: Aluminum sulfate (alum) is added to poultry litter in the poultry house to reduce ammonia volatilization. Purpose: Over half of the nitrogen excreted by chickens is lost to the atmosphere as ammonia before the litter is removed from poultry houses. Research has shown that alum additions to poultry litter greatly reduces ammonia emissions. Lower ammonia levels in poultry houses...
With most data management software systems having failed to cater the industry , I am wondering if there is a good system out there that i might not have come across . P.S - I have personally explored most if not all the data poultry management systems, but so far none are even close to the standards. ...
I. INTRODUCTION Farm animal welfare is an important subject in higher income countries particularly in the EU, Switzerland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the USA especially for commercial poultry production. It has been demonstrated that there is a strong relationship between Gross National Income and Animal Welfare Legislation (Van Horne and Achterbosch, 2008). According to Bennett’s (1996) study, 21% of respondents were “very...
Introduction
The first research work in lighting management for commercial poultry was conducted by Morris in the 1960´s. This work described the lighting management for egg-type layers, a tool that had not been used before. Since then, egg-type layers have lost their seasonal response to daylength (Morris et al., 1995) and do not respond physiologically to light stimuli as other birds do. This change in...

In a Linkedin group "Layers in Argentina" discussed the importance of daily and weekly records. Where the observation was one of the key control measures in the prevention of causes that impact the performance of the flock, followed by an appropriate capture and storage of records. From these practices can nurture and create an early warning system behavior in the house, and follow trends of the actual measurements compared with the standard of each strain can be...
INTRODUCTION In recent years, chicken has been extensively being used for human nutrition and protein supply. Due to fast growth, ease of feeding, using enclosed space, and supplying requisite materials of human body, broiler farming has special advantages. Thank to increasing demand for this product and fast growth of population, use of modern knowledge and suitable scientific and technical methods is crucial for...

The objective of this video is explore ways to make the quality control program more effective in reducing feed cost and improving poultry productivity. The program enables us to interpret variations in nutrient levels, detect feed problems before birds are negatively affected, evaluate and compare ingredient suppliers, detect adulteration, and provide valuable information for interpreting possible feed effects on field problems. ...
