Poultry management

Poultry management usually refers to the husbandry practices or production techniques that help to maximize the efficiency of production. Sound management practices are very essential to optimize production. Scientific poultry management aims at maximizing returns with minimum investment. A carefully controlled environment that avoids crowding, chilling, overheating, or frightening is almost universal in poultry farming. Cannibalism, which expresses itself as toe picking, feather picking, and tail picking, is controlled by debeaking at one day of age and by other management practices. The feeding, watering, egg gathering, and cleaning operations are highly mechanized. Birds are usually housed in wire cages with two or three animals per cage, depending on the species and breed, and three or four tiers of cages superposed to save space. Cages for egg-laying birds have been found to increase production, lower mortality, reduce cannibalism, lower feeding requirements, reduce diseases and parasites, improve culling, and reduce both space and labour requirements.
Aviagen, the world's leading poultry breeding company, recently completed a week-long poultry management course in Beijing. The school brought participants from all across China together to learn the latest information in all areas of poultry science and its practical application to managing successful breeder and broiler operations. During the course, held March 12-16 at the Jiuhua Resort & Convention Centre in Beijing, 45 attendees from nine different poultry companies across China came...

Providing a clean, safe and sanitized water supply is crucial in assuring flocks perform their best. However, before implementing a daily water sanitation program, it is important to thoroughly clean as much of the water distribution system as possible. Line cleaning is necessary before providing birds with sanitized drinking water because even low levels of sanitizer placed in dirty water lines can result in the biofilm sloughing off, which clogs drinkers so that water is...

The renewable energy and waste to energy sectors are growing rapidly in response to international pressures from Governments to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill sites and to minimize greenhouse gas emissions. As a result, the production of green energy from renewable sources and recycling are becoming increasingly important. This trend is being reinforced by the increased cost and reduced availability of landfill sites for industrial and other waste. These circumstances...

The National Research Council (NRC) is the last surviving independent organization to publish nutrient requirement data for farm, pet and lab animal species. The published values are often accepted as ‘standards’ especially in developing countries, and by government organizations charged with establishing guidelines for legislation. The question often asked is “are NRC values of commercial relevance today?” and if not, “what is the basis for such discrepancies?” The...

The higher, the better: air and odour emissions from livestock buildings have to be led away from the buildings as far as possible so that they spread before they start to bother anybody. Big Dutchman in Vechta-Calveslage offers an effective tool to fulfil these requirements without making it necessary to install unsightly and expensive extra chimneys: a guide vane for pig and poultry houses. An independent test by the German Agricultural Society (DLG) now confirms the excellent performance...

Peter Kleinman plans to take his research on the road this fall. Every month or so, the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) soil scientist will leave the rolling valleys of Pennsylvania dairy country for corn, crabs and chicken—hallmarks of the Delmarva Peninsula. The 5,950-square-mile peninsula encompasses parts of Delaware, Maryland and Virginia. There, Kleinman will investigate an experimental method of injecting chicken litter into the soil to keep this natural fertilizer from running...

Chickens are sensitive to changes in the duration of illumination, and these will influence the age of sexual maturity. In addition, feed consumption is greatly influenced by the duration of day length. Lighting programmes have, therefore, different objectives. During rearing, they allow us to...

In tropical and subtropical countries, the layers are subjected to important heat stress. This heat stress can occur during long periods. The lower feed intake noticed during these periods is the result of the bird’s reduced ability to lose heat. The lower growth rates during...

The unparalleled concept is based on the idea to decisively reduce management requirements in laying hen aviary housing and, at the same time, increase the product reliability. The inspection aisle, the most important feature of the well thought-out Natura60 design, facilitates overall management by remaining free of litter, hens and manure. This means that all eggs - including mislaid eggs -roll off the system automatically and smoothly and can easily be collected from the inspection...

Egg producers now have access to a new tool developed by the Agricultural Research Service that helps protect laying flocks from serious diseases like infectious bronchitis, mycoplasmosis and exotic Newcastle disease. Each year, mycoplasmosis alone costs U.S. producers more than $140 million, partly due to uneven vaccine delivery. Vaccines are currently dispensed to egg-laying leghorn chickens as an inhalable mist sprayed inside poultry houses. The applicator consists of a hose attached to...

As a senior citizen raising poultry 40 years in a family farm setting, I'd like to know how someone can access the kind of studies that have been done, and the CONTROLS that were done with them. In specific, I'd like to find out if any clinical trials have tried THIS PROTOCOL on a separate group, with a third group "untreated" by anything. All poultry waterers are cleaned at least weekly with the new botanical cleaner CLEANWELL Botanical Disinfectant and then 1/2 teaspoon of Grapefruit...
