The Poultry Science Association Foundation (PSA Foundation) was pleased to announce a $50,000 gift pledge over five years from Aviagen® North America during the 2017 International Production and Processing Expo (IPPE) in Atlanta, Ga. The Continuing Education Endowment will support poultry science students who are interested in attending graduate school for M.S., Ph.D. and DVM degrees.
"Aviagen acknowledges the critical need for talented young scientists in the poultry breeder and poultry production industries,” said Kevin McDaniel, President of Aviagen North America, the global poultry breeding company based in Huntsville, Ala.
The Aviagen Continuing Education Endowment will support an undergraduate student entering his or her junior year or a beginning graduate student and is renewable for the following year subject to satisfactory academic progress. Preference will be given for students interested in the sciences necessary to continue at the graduate level in Poultry Science; these students are encouraged to apply for the Inaugural Aviagen Education Award. The endowment was made possible through the PSA Foundation Charting Our Course – Securing Future Leadership for Poultry Campaign (Capital Campaign).
“At Aviagen, we’re committed to encouraging upcoming generations of poultry professionals and helping them achieve their greatest potential,” stated Mr. McDaniel. “The Continuing Education Endowment is one concrete way we are able to contribute to their success. We feel privileged to have the opportunity to participate in the endowment program.”
Nationwide student recruitment for the Aviagen Education Endowment Award is anticipated to begin in early spring of 2018, with the application process to be completed in the late spring. Aviagen North America and the PSA Foundation will announce the 2018 recipient during the PSA’s Annual Meeting.
About the Capital Campaign and the PSA Foundation
The Capital Campaign was launched by the PSA Foundation in January 2015 and aims to develop scientific leaders in subject matter areas, such as poultry genetics, health and nutrition, and food safety and quality, for the poultry enterprise and allied industry. Funds of the Capital Campaign are used to award undergraduate internships, undergraduate scholarships, graduate fellowships, travel grants and preceptor/mentoring grants.
The PSA Foundation is a charitable corporation affiliated with the Poultry Science Association with the primary purpose of advancing the founding principles of PSA. Since its founding in 2004, the PSA Foundation has worked to support a variety of initiatives, such as the Legacy Project which digitized and indexed issues published since 1906 of Poultry Science, one of PSA’s journals.
The pledge announcing the Aviagen North America gift is being presented by Mr. Kevin McDaniel, President of Aviagen North America to Dr. Lisa Bielke, Chair of the Poultry Science Association Board of Trustees.
A positive step in the right direction at the right time to help young poultry scientist who are interested in pursuing a postgraduate programme in poultry (avian) science especially at this time that the poultry industry is being challenged by the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) worldwide and Nigeria in particular. I appeal to the sponsors of this wonderful and excellent gift to kindly extend their hand of fellowship to young scientists in Nigeria who may send their proposals in this line of research so as to find a long term solution to this global menace of HPAI in poultry.
This is a good foundation needed to develop a cross sector of the public and private. Initiatives like poultry academics and private initiatives that will improve poultry health. By improving poultry food. Safety through mycotoxin mitigation in tropical climate of Africa. Mycotoxin is today the greatest health and human health consequences of one health one medicine. A new NGO Livestock Industry Foundation for Africa www.lifango.org a livestock NGO committed to absolute mitigation of mycotoxin In Africa and help to improve poultry food security. We would love to collaborate with this foundation in tropical Africa. Kindly get in touch with us and please view the NGO knowledge capitalization on mycotoxin and other technical issues relevant to improve poultry production in Africa.
I am humbled as poultry industry is growing rapidly hence the need to improve it more in the breeding sector. I wish many funders could come on board and support more programmes.
I am a young undergraduate Veterinary Student from Nepal. Nepal has great potential for poultry productionn however because of limited resaerch and knowledge technology we are not satisfy to our production system and health managment. I have keen interest on reserch in poultry health mangament but it is difficult to get this oppertunity in Nepal both technically and financially. any other option for me ?
Many thanks to Aviagen for this financial support to encourage young scientists to pursue with their research work on poultry health and production. PSAF will have to select those who deserve the funding. It may be a good initiative to provide a part of the fund to young AFRICAN scientists.
It is better to include the subject of Natural Herbal technology to face the problems of using synthetic antibiotics .Natural foods available with immune boosters are also to be incorporated inview of our future healthy generations.
