Methionine belongs to the twenty amino acid making up proteins. It is an essential sulfur-containing amino acid. As essential aminoacid, It cannot be synthesized by the animal and its requirement should be supplied trough the feed.
It is one of the first limiting amino acids in the synthesis of any protein. It is also required for many cellular functions, such as:
- Initiation of protein synthesis
- Methylation of DNA and rRNA
- Biosynthesis of cysteine
- Synthesis of phospholipids and polyamines
Nowadays it is a common practice to include synthetic or analogous methionine in feed compound due to:
- The continuous improvement in the animal genetically growth capacity of the last decades makes necessary a more concentrate nutrients feed.
- The elevate price and low availability of rich methionine raw materials.
- Natural variability of methionine content in raw materials.
The optimal level of methionine has been widely studied. Low levels produce immediately worsening of zootechnical parameters.
- Reduced growth rate.
- Worsening FCR.
- Hepatic damage.
- Bad condition of immune system leading to higher susceptibility.
- Poor feathering.
- Decreased egg production and egg weight.
Methionine should be balanced with the rest of essential aminoacids. Adding methionine when other essential aminoacids are limiting is of none or low benefit.
For example, in the case of adding methionine to a feed that is deficient in lysine, the protein synthesis will only continue to the level associated with the first limiting amino acid, in this case lysine.
METHPLUS
