Forum: HOW TO START A COMMERCIAL PIG FARM IN GHANA

Published: March 8, 2010
By: Opoku Agyeman

I have a 40 acre farm in Ghana, West Africa which I am plannig of turning into a PIG production enterprise. I am actively seeking professional recommendations as how to commence the project on a industrial scale. My goal is to have a farm where i will produce and process to the market. These are the areas that i require suggestions:

1. the number of sow that i need to start a successful operation
2. modern design of housing for the pigs
3. the type of breed that will withstand the tropics
4. equipments required for slaughtering, processing and etc
5. development of feeding on the farm
6. best practices to make this operation an investment winner

I will welcome any comments that will lead me to gathher as much information for me to begin the project.
It is slated to start in july of this year. thanks for all your inputs.

thanks
Opoku

I have assessed to about 50 acres of land near Winneba in the Central Region of Ghana. I am interested in any serious farmer or investor who wants to set up a commercial farm. The land is free for the initial 3 years on condition that at least 60% of labour comes from the community. any interested investor can contact me.
Thank you.

My wife and I are now into the 5 month of Pig farming in Uganda. The challenge is becoming the cost of feeds. We have available locally grown soya beans and maize( white and yellow corn). There are existing factory made animal feeds-which have become very expensive for us. We would therefore like to make our own on the farm. We are in need of advice about sources of premixes that we can buy(import) that can complement our locally produced feeds. Any clues? Thank you. Emmanuel

I would like to have funding for my pig farming. I have over 250 pigs and I would want to get funding or an investor who is interested in partnering or funding our project. The project is in Ghana, precisely Kumasi.

COMFORT OWUSU The following are some of the things farmers should start addressing the marketing challenges
1. Keeping a good structure and good sanitation
2. Feed the animal balance diet.
3. Marketing

DZIHLORNU JONAH i will recommend that you start with 5 sows already crossed with a young boar and about 30 weaners. before the sows piglets reach full market weight, you would have paved the market with the weaners
