Dr. John Htoo, Global Senior Expert in Swine Nutrition at Evonik, shared strategic insights on how to support gut health and optimize the performance of weaned pigs through targeted nutritional interventions. His presentation focused on three key levers: nutrients, feed ingredients, and functional additives.
After weaning, piglets face significant stress, immune challenges, and a higher risk of digestive issues like diarrhea. One critical factor is the protein content in the diet. Diets with excessive protein can lead to an overgrowth of harmful bacteria. Dr. Htoo emphasized the importance of lowering protein levels carefully—without compromising the supply of essential amino acids. When properly balanced, these diets can improve gut health and support healthy growth.
Fiber also plays a vital role. Certain combinations of insoluble and soluble fiber contribute to a healthier gut environment by promoting beneficial bacteria and improving stool quality. Some fiber sources even help reduce the presence of intestinal pathogens. Alternative ingredients like sugar beet pulp or hybrid rye were shown to have positive effects on gut function, without sacrificing performance.
The presentation also explored the use of specific feed additives. Probiotics based on Bacillus strains improved gut structure and reduced diarrhea, even under bacterial or viral challenges. Organic acids such as butyrate supported the intestinal lining and enhanced nutrient absorption. Additionally, functional amino acids like threonine, methionine, and tryptophan were shown to strengthen immune responses and help piglets recover from stress or infection more effectively.
In summary, Dr. Htoo advocated for a holistic approach: combining a precision-fed, lower-protein diet with smart fiber choices and proven additives can significantly enhance the health and productivity of weaned pigs—without the need for antibiotic growth promoters.
