Phytobiotics as natural growth promoter

Published: May 6, 2010
Summary
The strong fuctuations of feed ingredient prices in combination with low market prices for shrimp are challenging the proftability of shrimp farming. This has accelerated a search for alternative formulations and feed additives to improve the cost effciency of feeding under various scenarios of ingredient cost and availability.

Dear Mr Coutteau, Thank you for your article. Phytogenic compounds certainly have a lot of potential application in aquaculture, and particularly so in shrimp aquaculture. A similar sized trial was also done in Panama last year testing the using the compound Orego-Stim. The results from this trial of another phytogenic product are exceedingly productive. Comments from the shrimp farmer Mr Juan Achurra doing the study were “In this field trial done on my farm, the Orego-Stim® Aquatract groups produced 3.5 tonnes harvest weight compared to the control group which produced 2 tonnes. Harvest weights per hectare were 913kg with Orego-Stim® Aquatract and 472kg per hectare in the control groups. These increased harvest weights gave me a 3:1 return on investment on the cost of Orego-Stim®, Aquatract.”
