Newly hatched chicks are deficit in natural microflora that would otherwise have been passed from the adult hen. In poultry production, good intestinal health is crucial for general health and welfare of the birds. Intestinal health encompasses various components of gastrointestinal function, including optimal digestion and absorption of nutrients, a diverse and stable microbiota, an effective intestinal immune system, a solid intestinal barrier against pathogens and toxins and a component of neuroendocrine system. In poultry, the maintenance of a stable intestinal flora is essential to prevent dysbacteriosis, which may predispose birds to major infectious diseases such as necrotic enteritis caused by Clostridium perfringens and diseases caused by Salmonella and E coli.
Use of multi-strain probiotics is needed to promote optimal development of microbiota especially post-hatch and post antibiotic application.
