Managing Feed Efficiency Using Enzymes

Published: August 17, 2022
By: Rossari Biotech Limited
Feed accounts for more than 70% of total production cost in Poultry and optimization of performance using least feed cost is one of the pre requisites to ensure profitable Poultry production. With changes in the raw material availability, price, quality and so on, there is a huge demand to finding alternate forms of ingredients which optimise the performance and at the same time do not allow the feed cost go to the higher side.
Although alternative ingredients are an economical option for feed producers, nutritive value and Wellness of poultry birds can highly suffer in this process. Thus, it is very important to ensure careful and balanced use of a mix of Enzymes.
When it comes to the cereals, the predominant NSP’s are arabinoxylans, cellulose and Beta Glucans which make up to 80-90% of total NSP makes in the cereals. They have a direct negative impact on energy availability of monogastric diets largely due to the increasing digesta viscosity. Arabinoxylans (AX) represent the main NSP present in wheat and corn, comprising 7.3% and 4.7% of the DM and accounting for 52% and 65% of the total NSP, respectively. The AX content increases by around 20% in the cereal by-products like bran & DDGs. To overcome such anti-nutritional effects, it is always suggested to incorporate Carbohydrases/NSPase in the diet to ensure proper utilization of these carbohydrates which if left unchecked can impact the performance of the birds. These kinds of enzymes have gained the momentum and are currently the most accepted performance enhancer enzyme segment in the poultry industry.
Protein nutrition is the second most contributor to poultry feed. Soybean Meal (SBM) is the most commonly used plant protein and it has about 85% of digestibility. Mannans, however, together with pectin’s constitute the primary NSP part in the protein seed meal. These non-starch polysaccharides are a diverse group of molecules with varying degrees of water solubility, size, and structure affecting the gut viscosity, physiology, digestibility and nutrient availability.
However, in the current times, the exorbitantly high prices of SBM have led to a challenge of profitable production to the poultry industry. But, careful selection of enzyme formulations for using protein rich alternatives, with variable digestibility quotient for crude protein and larger percentage of hemicellulose content, can help to overcome the cost & availability concerns.
When it comes to achieving optimum production performance, balancing and precision inclusion of nutrients in the poultry diets are of utmost importance. However, the feed ingredients commonly used are not completely digestible in the poultry gut impacting the digestive and other physiological functions.
In case of poultry birds, they can utilise only 75 to 80% of the nutrients while the Energy and protein cost is more than 90% to the feed production cost. Thus, it’s not just the waste of nutrients but also the money.
More than 20% of the total plant protein in #feed remains undigested and excreted by Poultry Birds. Thus, understanding the nutritional potential of diverse feed ingredients is crucial to improve bird performance and optimize feed cost.
In today’s competitive market, the use of feed enzymes in poultry has gained more acceptance. One of the most critical factors required to employ an enzyme regime in any nutritional program successfully is to determine and assess the nature and percentage of substrate present in the formulation. Apart from Nutritional benefits to the bird, the enzymes have now become an important tool optimise and enhance the performance of birds.
Rossari biotech limited with its Enzyme solutions like Maxizyme EX (Cocktail of Carbohydrases, Proteases and Probiotics), Xylot EX (Xylanase) and Protoxy Forte (Protease) is able to support the industry to help manage the anti-nutritional factors in the feed, enhance the digestibility of the feed and at the same time improve the performance of the birds ensuring value deliverance and profitability.
