The combination of nutrition and immunology takes center stage in the IPVS2022 Pre-Congress Program

Considered to be one of the greatest challenges to optimizing production costs, performance, and pig health, the topic of nutrition will receive special attention in Session 4, scheduled to begin at 2pm on June 21st, 2022, as part of the IPVS2022 Pre-Congress Program. The IPVS2022 will take place from June 21st to June 24th at RioCentro in Rio de Janeiro (RJ).

The speakers, including Siska Croubels, from the University of Ghent (Belgium), Paulo Campos, Swine nutrition consultant at Cargill Animal Nutrition (Brazil), and John Pluske from the Australasian Pork Research Institute (Australia),will share relevant information on the combination of nutrition, performance, and immune response in pigs.

Entitled Immunology through Nutrition, Session 4 will address the importance of functional nutrition for overcoming health challenges and potential infections. According to the session coordinator Bruno Silva, professor and researcher in Pig Nutrition and Production and Environmental Adaptation at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), speakers will discuss the way in which external factors such as mycotoxins and thermal conditions can contribute to the improvement of the immune response against health challenges.

Furthermore, Bruno Silva adds, this issue is about keeping with current global changes designed to phase out the use of antibiotics and reduce the use of zinc oxide in pork production. A better understanding of the role of nutrition as a modulating agent of the immune system will allow us to develop new nutritional strategies aimed at operating antibiotic-free systems that are still dealing with health challenges. Silva is an expert in the interaction between thermal environment and the pig´s immune system.

In Silva´s opinion, considering that the IPVS Congress is the world´s most important technical and scientific forum to discuss extremely important areas for pig production such as biosecurity, productivity, and technical innovation, the addition of such relevant topic will help shape the way forward for the pig industry.

Besides the session dedicated to nutrition, the Pre-Congress will discuss other important issues. According to the IPVS2022 President, Fernanda Almeida, the program is very comprehensive as it covers many issues such as reproduction, antimicrobials, mucosal immunity, African Swine Fever (ASF), as well as a panel on agribusiness, thus giving participants a global view of the future of pig production.
