Dr. Steven McOrist was appointed the new President of the British Pig Veterinary Society (PVS) at its spring conference in Solihull.

Dr McOrist started his pig industry career in 1977 in Australia and has worked on pig farms and in many advisory and academic roles in the UK and abroad. He now teaches on pig health and management in the UK and advises on meat inspection to the European Commission.
He said: "Veterinary surgeons that care for pigs are part of a technical team for farmers, which also includes geneticists, nutritionists and environmental scientists. We are part of the broad picture aiming to retain and improve on pork's position as the world's number one meat.
"The pig industry has always lacked a ‘bulk outlet' for its meat product, along the lines of a KFC or McDonalds. We can therefore continue to support producers in delivering a consistently high quality pork product for the many distinctive and popular British pork products and brands."
Dr McOrist also notes the many global brands in breeding pig supply which are based in Britain, such as PIC, JSR, ACMC, Rattlerow, Hermitage and others. "One strong contribution to feeding the 7 billion consumers now on our planet, can be the supply of high quality breeding pigs to new and expanding farms in the UK and around the world."
The Pig Veterinary Society provides balanced and independent scientific advice to industry, media and political leaders. In May 2013, there will be a joint meeting in Edinburgh with the full European contingent of pig veterinary specialists will celebrate Pig Veterinary Society's 50th anniversary.
