Simultaneous replacement of ZnO and antibiotics with a Natural NGP to prevent PWD and maintain performance in pigs in field conditions in Spain

Published: September 4, 2019
Summary
Introduction Antibiotics and pharmacological levels of ZnO are common recommendations for prevention of PWD and improvement of growth performance in farms (1). The EC has scheduled a ban on ZnO as of 2022 and increasing incidence of AMR requires restrictive and prudent use (2). This study investigated the effectiveness of an in-feed complex alternative formula of esterified butyrins, med...

How many replicates were there per treatment group? The body weight at the trial end is mentioned, however, you do not mention trial duration in days? I do not understand the inclusion rate of ZnO in the control group as you continue with 1500 ppm even after a three week period with 2500 ppm? If you continue to supplement pharmacological levels of ZnO beyond 2-3 weeks it can reduce animal performance. When you mention that your client supplement only 3kg/t instead of 4kg/t shown in the trial it must be justified in some way - could you elaborate on that?

Dear Steffen, The replicates been 8 per group. The duration of the trial was 39 days (from weaning at 21 days of age till 60 days of age). The treatments in the control group been as follow: D21 - D42 of age : ZnO 2500 ppm + Neomycin (150 ppm) D43 - D60 of age : ZnO 1500 ppm I'm completely agree that long duration of treatment with ZnO is reducing the performance, but the control group is typical for Spain ZnO treatment (and not only in Spain). The trial was a real case for replacing ZnO and Neomycin. We followed the existing situation in terms of medication and request for its replacing. The reduced dose (3 kg/T) trial was followed by the client and they did not provided us the exact results except oral feed back. They did two experimental trials (one with 4 kg and second with 3 kg) and after that they did large scale trial in commercial farm and after that they implemented in the integrator. They evaluated all results and decided to implement the program at regular base in the integrator. The program with Lumance at 3 kg in PreStarter and Starter is typical and at regular basis in many integrators in Spain. It replaced ZnO and Neomycin but not Amoxicillin. Since June this year we launched a new concept (Cerebra S) which is replacing also Amoxicillin. I'm at your disposal for any question. My mail address is : (m.sevastiyanova@innovad-global.com)
