Yeast cell walls support higher growth than whole yeast when fed in broiler chicken diets

Summary
I. INTRODUCTION Non-therapeutic in-feed usage of antibiotics in animal diets has been implicated in development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, some of which are zoonotic and pathogenic to humans (Stanton, 2013). Based on this fact, the European Union placed a ban on such usage of antibiotics 12 years ago (European commission, 2005; Castanon, 2007). However, the continuous incidence of antibio...
The setup and concept of the trial is very nice indeed, but the results are a bit uncommon. It's strange that a 109 grams difference in BWG (2318 versus 2209 grams is NOT significant. The same for 7 pts FCR (1.47 versus 1.40). And an improvement of 18 points FCR (1.47 versus 1.29) for a relatively inert material like yeast cell wall is out of physiological perception. Maybe the control group was relatively poor and the variability huge ? One would also have expected inactive yeast (rich in PROTEIN) contributing more than it's cell walls. How to explain ? Studies show that GLUCAN rich yeast cell wall might (over-) boost immunity, resulting in lower performance (consumption of nutrients by immune system)..
