Nutrition - nutritional concepts for all major species

Evonik’s Nutrition services

Nutritionists can accurately design  feeds only if they know the animal’s needs at different growth phases and the composition of each feed ingredient. Get support for all major species.

NUTRITIONAL CONCEPTS TO MAXIMIZE EFFICIENCY

Our four concepts support the production maximizing the profitability while exactly meeting the nutritional needs of animals over the differing phases of the production cycle. This leads to efficient production, minimizing use of scarce natural resources and thus contributing to sustainable animal agriculture.

STANDARDIZED DIGESTIBILITY

Understanding the true value of a raw material is essential. Over the last 50 years many systems have been developed to explain the comparative value of protein and amino acids to different species. For many years Evonik has actively participated and conducted research to best explain the nutritional value of different raw materials. This has lead to the development of the Standardized Ileal Digestibility (SID) system for evaluation of amino acids in swine and poultry. Evonik has published considerable SID data both for poultry and pigs and continues to regularly evaluate raw materials.

LOW PROTEIN DIETS

The land area available for the production of feed raw materials is limited and increasingly so with the competition arising from the production of bio-fuels. Amino acids play an essential role in maximizing the efficient use of these increasingly limited resources. Evonik contributes a deep understanding on both the amino acids content of feed raw materials, as well as decades of knowledge about the nutritional needs of different animal species over the various phases of the life cycle. When combined, this knowledge allows nutritionists to formulate diets that optimally meet the animal’s needs and increase the efficiency with which animals can use nutrients. Today, this is especially important where pollution can arise from animal agriculture. Low protein diets provide a solution and directly reduce excretion of nutrients when used optimally. Typically a one percent reduction in the level of protein in the diet can lead to a ten percent reduction in the excretion of protein.

ENERGY SYSTEMS

The feed industry uses various systems to measure and define the quantity of energy in feed raw materials and the requirements of animals. The Digestible Energy (DE), Metabolizable Energy (ME) and Net Energy (NE) are the major systems commonly used in the feed industry. DE accounts for energy lost with feces and ME accounts for energy lost with feces and urine but don’t consider metabolic heat which is the biggest single energy loss (25 percent). Around the world, the NE system has become standard for pigs, while in poultry the ME system predominates.

Through our research both past and present, Evonik plays a role in creating data that allows producers to make the most accurate and efficient use of feed ingredients and thus directly contributes to the financial success of our customers.

NUTRITIONAL RECOMMENDATIONS

Evonik regularly publishes and updates a series of amino acid recommendations for producers of poultry and pigs. These recommendations are the results of extensive research carried out around the world. Recommendations exist for a range of species, and provide information to reflect the phases of the production system as well as biological differences between animals of differing sexes.
