The cows calving in early summer need to be in proper body condition, in addition to be intensively cooled

Published: July 21, 2020
Summary
Efficient cooling systems based on water evaporation from cow's body surface have been developed in last four decades in dairy sectors of warm climate countries. The main effect of cooling is in reducing the drop in food consumption caused by heat stress, in addition to the normal drop in food consumption in the beginning of lactation, resulted by the mobilization of body reserves and with all it...

When you talk about cooled cows, how do you actually cool them down in this study?

Jean Vincent Bioret We cooled the cows by sessions of short wetting combined with continued forced ventilation, to maintain cows at normal body temperature (< 39.0 C).

Greetings Doctor

It is clear in your article that cows that get cool have a better response in milk production and gestation, heat stress damages their physiology too much. Here it is difficult to understand this problem even and we continue with the anachronistic ideas that lower milk is due to lack of food only, when there are many factors that influence it, such as the temperatures that exist and that will increase. In a study carried out in two dairy units, it was possible to obtain values of up to 83.0 of ITH in summer, which caused a loss of production of less than 15%.

We hope to obtain new results to further demonstrate this problem and let it be understood by the staff in charge.

yes I agree. The threshold for heat stress is lower in obese cows.
