Thank very much for this interesting article. However, the question i would like to ask is whether there are other known ways one can use to cool dairy cows other than using fans for this is out of reach for many farmers. What i have in mind is cowshed structure. Please advise and if possible with a housing design that would guarantee cool/low temperatures during hot whether.
Prevention of cows being in direct solar radiation and good natural ventilation can help cows in the hot season
Anyhow, it will not be sufficient for high yielding cows who generate much heat to be dissipated through a cooling treatment
What would your thoughts be on using water? I have seen sprinklers being used which spray the cows. How it works is that a timer is on the pump and set to wet the cows for 2 minutes and off for 10 minutes. Cows are wet on the feed pad just before afternoon milking.
HelloMark,
Wetting the cow is a good mean to cool her. the most efficient way to cool the cow is to evaporate this water from cow skin (5 times more efficient than just wettin). Therefore, if there is no strong natural winds when wetting the cows, it is mostly recommended to blow air on them artificially (ventilators)
