Effect of Age at First Calving on First Lactation Milk Yield in Holstein Cows from Costa Rican Specialized Dairy Herds
Published:August 20, 2021
Summary
1. Introduction Reducing the production costs is becoming more important in the dairy industry. The suitable development of replacement heifers is an expensive investment for dairy farms, so estimations of all associated costs are about 20% of the total production costs [1]. The age at first calving (AFC) reflects the rate of growth of the female. A late entry in the productive life reduces t...
Interesting and at the same time debatable. When AFC are based on age and not weigh and high, the expectations of getting a good cow, become slim.
I would suggest a similar analysis on herds in the Highs of Costa Rica, above 1800 msnm,
AFC's in those regions are average to those of European countries.
I believe that the secret to this situation consist into investing in gavage of cow's milk as main feed for the first 3 months of life with an extra 3 months of gradual drying, warm milk, with a teat. This will maximize the production, remember that the best 305 days production will be at 5-6-7th lactations, with strong bones and taller skeleton. Clement Doyer
