Replacement of fish oil in aquaculture diets, and related issues

Published: October 29, 2008

The reduction in the use of fish oils in aquaculture diets has been recognised as an important issue to resolve for the aquaculture industry. In Western Australia, our production of canola and canola oil provides us with a potential alternative to fish oil.

Of the available alternatives to fish oil, canola oil is one of the more promising candidates. It has higher omega-3 (n-3) levels than most other candidates and is readily accepted by fish in the studies that we have conducted.

Some alternatives to fish oil result in a change to the usual taste of fish flesh. Research is being carried out address this issue.
