Traditionally, and during the resting periods at the farming centres, the salmon industry has had to "release" the cages and move them to a safe place for cleaning and disenfecting their parts. These tasks, imply significant expenses and logistical requirements. However, and after the Sernapesca approval, Prinal is offering a disinfectant that can be used in seawater and considerably diminishes these taks' time consumption and expenses. Moreover, it ensures better results in the elimination of certain microorganisms such as the ISA virus.
According to the company's Area Representative, veterinarian Alejandro Ugarte, the Prinacid 3000 disinfectant eliminates all microorganisms (pathogens and non pathogens) from an inanimate surface, such as floating cages, buoys and concrete slabs, without the need of moving them from their mooring spot and taking on the costs this would imply.
"The disinfection is carried out encompassing part or sections of the installation with an asphalt cloth. The seawater that remains in the cloth is removed with a pump and the disinfectant is then poured. The product is left to perform for a certain amount of time and then the canvas is removed", Ugarte explained, adding that such task was approved with good results in a company's fattening centre and with a price comparatively much smaller.
Prinal's representative expressed the importance of allowing the disinfectant to be dissolved in seawater, that it be possilbe to work with up to 5% of organic material, and that the taks be carried out with a ship with with a hydraulic arm, concluding that "this procedure guarantees a complete and effective disinfection and it is optimal to be used under the new zoning model for the industry, since it avoids the transfer of parts that could be contaminated with pathogens".
