Scientists in northern Tasmania have found that barramundi grow more quickly when fed lupins rather than smaller fish like anchovies.
Professor Chris Carter of the University of Tasmania's School of Aquaculture says the discovery could save the aquaculture industry millions of dollars in fish food costs, ABC News reported.
"I've always liked lupin as a replacement; it's got really good nutritional properties," he said.
"We've tried it in salmon and trout and now we've had a go with barramundi. In a very short experiment we did actually show that lupins will produce slightly better growth than fishmeal. That is marvellous - we would have been pleased if they'd just equalled the growth."
The scientists are also using the tropical fish to help prepare local fish farms for global warming. They are investigating how barramundi have adapted to higher temperatures and how they use food and temperature to grow.
