MOI BROODSTOCK: Research by-product for sale

The Oceanic Institute is soliciting bids from qualified farmers for the purchase of Pacific threadfin (moi) stocks (4) derived from a recently completed moi selective breeding project. Recipient of research products must demonstrate suitable capability (facilities/expertise) to maintain moi stocks. Available stocks include:


(A) Fifteen (15) eight year old F1 broodstock including 13 females, one male, and 1 unknown sex that were randomly selected (controls) with an average weight of 1.18 kg in December 2007. Minimum price of $3,000 for the lot ($200/fish).

(B) Eighteen (18) eight year old F1 broodstock including 14 females, 2 males, 2 of unknown sex that were selected as top growth performers at market size. Average weight in December 2007 was 1.29 kg. Minimum price of $4,500 for the lot ($250/fish).

(C) Forty-eight (48) five-year old F2 broodstock derived from the spawning of the F1 growth selected population above. The population includes 18 females, 22 males, and 8 of unknown sex, with an average weight of 1.1 kg in December 2007. Minimum price of $7,200 for the lot ($150/fish).

(D) Approximately one-hundred (100) moi from a 2007 hatchery run selected for increased body weight at the end of nursery in October 2007. This population is currently at approximately 500g (1 lb.) total body weight with minimum price of $5,000 for the lot ($50/fish).


The F2 select population demonstrated a 17% increase in growth compared with fingerling obtained from wild-collected controls. Both the F1 and F2 populations are spawning year-round with the F1 starting to spawn in late 2003 and the F2s beginning to spawn in May 2007.

The successful bidder is responsible for all costs associated with continued maintenance, handling and transport of stocks after the date of January 8, 2009. Stocks will be sold as complete lots with a minimum or upset bid for each lot as described above.
