In response to the growing interest from the commercial dairy farming community and academicians on exploring an effective solution for addressing issues of fatty liver and ketosis in dairy animals, Kemin conducted a knowledge-sharing seminar in Ludhiana. The seminar, attended by more than 250 progressive dairy farmers and veterinary university professors, was held at the Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University.

The challenges faced during the transition period and the negative impact of fatty liver and ketosis were stressed by Dr. J.S. Bhatti, Professor, GADVASU, as he welcomed the audience. The point was further elaborated by Mr. Daljit Singh Gill, President, Progressive Dairy Farmers Association, as he spoke about the serious issue of fatty liver in dairy cows and the need to eliminate or reduce fatty liver in order to boost milk yield.

Dr. Deepak Kumar Dubey, Product Manager, Kemin, elaborated on the various physiological processes leading to fatty liver and ketosis, and their economic impact in commercial dairy farming. "Decline in dry matter intake during calving forces the cow to mobilize fat from the body. The real issue today is whether this fat is completely utilized or is wasted by getting deposited in the liver. Accumulation of fat in the liver leads to metabolic issues which negatively impact milk production," explained Dr. Dubey.

"CholiPEARL supplementation for 50 days ensures a return equal to the income from 300 days of milking," said Dr. Dubey
"Although fat utilization can be improved by choline, choline that is not protected is degraded in the rumen and does not provide any real benefit. Kemin provides CholiPEARLTM, a rumen-protected choline chloride. CholiPEARL enables the utilization of fat deposited in the liver, reduces metabolic disorders and optimizes peak milk production for the entire lactation period. By restoring metabolic health, CholiPEARL enables a dairy cow to produce the maximum amount of milk per her improved genetic potential," added Dr. Dubey.
The hallmark of CholiPEARL is the unique spray freeze technology by which it encapsulates choline chloride and protects it from rumen degradation. "Manufactured in Italy using superior coating technology, CholiPEARL is a totally new concept in the Indian dairy industry," he remarked.

Discussing the economic benefits of CholiPEARL, Dr. Dubey elaborated, "Trials have demonstrated a higher milk yield of 1.6Kg per day in CholiPEARL-fed cows as compared to the control. The minimum return on investment observed in Indian dairy farms is around Rs 2.5 for every rupee invested in CholiPEARL. Supplementation of CholiPEARL for 50 days (20 days before calving and 30 days after calving) prepares the ground for an extra income that can be derived in 300 days of milking, which is the average lactation period."

Dear All, Fatty liver and ketosis looks good to discuss for the usage of rumen protected Choline chloride. Fatty liver could be a sign when the glucose is over to utilisation while ketosis is noticed whilst glucose is defecient in blood. I shall appreciate Kemin sending their research findings or publish it in this forum. Many times people get carried away by the marketing efforts which may hide the scientific facts.
