International market expansion for Landcatch

A delivery of eggs to South Africa and a first time supply of smolts to Denmark are the most recent additions to a growing list of countries into which Landcatch Ltd., the Scotland and Chile-based salmon breeding company, is selling its pedigree strains of Atlantic salmon.

“The continuing geographic expansion of Landcatch stock placement is welcome in terms of business as well as feedback on stock performance,”  said Alan Stewart, Landcatch business development director.

“Every time we place eggs or smolts into a new environment, we inevitably gain valuable experience of stock performance under a new range of conditions.

"Such experience is extremely helpful to us in our drive to keep lifting the Landcatch strain to new levels of growth efficiency and disease resistance.”

Speaking at AquacultureUK 2008, which has opened in Aviemore today, Mr Stewart added that the new South African delivery was part of a growing Landcatch egg supply business dominated by customers in Scotland, Chile and Ireland.

The company’s smolt business, also dominated by Scotland and Chile, includes customers in Norway, Russia, Ireland, France, Shetland, Faroes and now Denmark.

“The fact that we have our own breeding programmes in Scotland and Chile provides us with excellent geographic flexibility in stock development,”  he said.

“Our two hemisphere structure also means we can comply with commercial farming requirements anywhere in the world, as these latest market advances illustrate.”
