Summary
Broiler production is an essential part of global poultry industry, and broiler meat is an important source of protein for human consumption. Spirulina platensis a blue-green alga and a multicellular prokaryote known for having many benefits as it contains a variety of nutrient that makes it excellent addition to broiler feed. The high protein, mineral and vitamin content in Spirulina p. help improve growth performance, meat quality, immune function, antioxidant status and gut microbiota composition in broilers. This review investigates nutrient-dense Spirulina platensis, a blue-green alga and a multicellular prokaryote, as a functional feed and nutritional supplement for broiler chickens aiming to address the growing concerns of antibiotic alternatives. The paper evaluates the impact of Spirulina p. on growth performance, aspects of body weight gain, feed conversion ratio and overall productivity. In addition to this, the study explores its influence on broiler meat quality, including parameters such as tenderness, colour and nutritional composition. The review highlights the effect of Spirulina p. on gut microbiota and morphology, emphasising its potential in gut health and nutrient absorption. Furthermore, it delves into the modulation of immune function and anti-oxidant status, explaining how Spirulina p. may boost the immune system and alleviate oxidative stress. The review provides valuable insights into the potential of Spirulina platensis as a multifaceted nutritional supplement for broiler chicken promoting sustainable and health-conscious poultry production.
Keywords: Spirulina platensis, functional additive, broilers, performance, gut health, hematology.
