Alternative feed additives have promising importance in broiler production due to the ban on the use of certain antibiotics. The most used antibiotic alternatives in broiler production are phytogenics, organic acids, prebiotics, probiotics, enzymes, and their derivatives. Antibiotic alternatives have been reported to increase feed intake, stimulate digestion, improve feed efficiency, increase growth performance, and reduce the incidence of diseases by modulating the intestinal microbiota and immune system, inhibiting pathogens, and improving intestinal integrity. Simply, the gut microbiota is the target to raise the health benefits and growth-promoting effects of feed additives on broilers. Therefore, naturally available feed additives are promising antibiotic alternatives for broilers.
Vyta Corp and Justin Holdings Inc., equal owners of their joint venture BioAgra LLC, announced the completion of a successful university study of its product Agrastim®, a purified yeast beta-1,3/1,6-D glucan product with an 80% or greater biological activity. This study was conducted at the University of Georgia, Athens, GA, in collaboration with the Southern Poultry Research Institute under the direction of Dr. Charles Hofacre and Mr. Greg Mathis, Ph.D., President of Southern...
At last year’s Alltech Symposium (Harter-Dennis, 2000) we reported results of work in our laboratory conducted to determine the possible effects of a high coefficient of variation (CV) of phytase application in commercial male broilers from 0-21 days of age. It was reported that coefficients of variation in feed sampling as high as 103% did not adversely affect efficacy of Allzyme Phytase when used at recommended levels in a post-pellet spray application system. While the young...
Federal officials on Friday placed a hold on 20 million chickens raised for market in several states because their feed was mixed with pet food containing an industrial chemical.
Three government agencies - the Agriculture Department, the Food and Drug Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency - are overseeing a risk assessment to determine whether the chickens would pose a threat to human health if eaten, USDA spokesman Keith Williams said. The assessment may be completed as...
Alltech's 23rd International Feed Industry Symposium will be held May 20-23 in Lexington, Ky.
The symposium provides an opportunity for international poultry experts to discuss impending issues, such as rising costs for energy sources, and propose viable solutions.
"Alltech's Symposium will allow industry experts to come together to explore and present the latest research on areas such as improving pre-starter diets for broilers with nucleotides, examining the relationship between trace...
After 50 years of routine usage, in-feed antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs) have been banned from animal feeds within the EU since the end of 2005. During this period of routine use management systems for pigs and poultry have changed dramatically and there was considerable concern that the in-feed ban would result in poorer performance and increased health problems. Consequently over the past several years much research effort has been devoted to investigating alternative feed additives...
Phyzyme XP also reduces phosphorus excretion by more than 30%. This environmental benefit is particularly important during a time when concerns about pollution control are increasingly high on the agenda.”
Liquid and granulate Phyzyme XP is now approved for use in broiler, layer, turkey, duck, sow, piglet and grower/finisher feeds.
Andrea Barletta, Danisco Animal Nutrition’s Marketing Director welcomed the news, and commented:
“The EU’s decision is good news for pig and poultry...
Aim of the Trial The aim of the trial was to determine the benefits and economic advantages of phytogenics (Biomin® P.E.P. 125 poultry) in commercial layers in the early stages of the egg production cycle. Trial Design A 12-week trial was carried out with...

The effectiveness of phytase in increasing the availability of phosphorus from plant-derived feedstuffs has been observed for several years. In most instances the exogenous phytase used to supplement poultry diets is obtained from an Aspergillus species which usually produces 3-phytase, a rather non-specific phosphomonoesterase that catalyses the dephosphorylation of myoinositol hexakisphosphate (phytate) and produces orthophosphate, which can be absorbed by monogastric animal species....
Introduction: evolution of practical phytase use The beneficial effects of phytase on the availability of phytate phosphorus have been known since the 1960s (Nelson, 1967) with considerable research having been undertaken and reported in the intervening years. Phytases have been available for many years; but not until the environmental impact of agriculture and urban sprawl became a political issue was there pressure to develop and utilize phytase in livestock feeds. The...

In order to keep up with the growing global demand for its products, Alltech has announced the expansion of its yeast factory in Brazil. Alltech Sao Pedro do Ivai has expanded to include a third spray dryer. This dryer will allow Alltech Sao Pedro to dry an additional 60 tonnes of product per day, which translates into a 60% increase in production. “The world’s largest yeast factory” now has the capability to produce 160 tonnes of dry product per day, bringing the annual production levels to...
The U.S. chicken industry does not use the drugs recently banned by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration from usage in poultry, according to a statement from the National Chicken Council.
The FDA on March 20 proposed a final rule to prohibit the extralabel use in poultry of two classes of approved human antiviral drugs in treating influenza.
Specifically, the FDA rule prohibits the extralabel use by veterinarians an anti-influenza adamatane (amantadine and rimantadine) and neuraminidase...
