A training program on mass euthanasia and disposal options in the event of a catastrophic poultry disease outbreak will be held on May 30 at the Stanislaus County Agricultural Center, in Modesto, California. The program for meat-type and floor poultry is sponsored by the University of California-Davis Veterinary Medicine Extension and is approved for the Poultry Meat Quality Assurance Plan. The morning euthanasia segment will include discussion of animal welfare requirements, guidelines and methods of euthanasia available, including equipment options and cost considerations for whole-house and partial-house euthanasia. The afternoon session will look at disposal options for diseased flocks, including burial, incineration and composting methods and how to meet local needs by customizing euthanasia and disposal methods.
