Resistance to coccidiosis

Microsatellite mapping of QTLs affecting resistance to coccidiosis (Eimeria tenella) in a Fayoumi × White Leghorn cross

Published: June 7, 2011
Summary
Abstract Background : Avian coccidiosis is a major parasitic disease of poultry, causing severe economical loss to poultry production by affecting growth and feed efficiency of infected birds. Current control strategies using mainly drugs and more recently vaccination are showing drawbacks and alternative strategies are needed. Using genetic resistance that would limit the nega...

The main research focus in Agri genomics is identification of genes that determines the expression of economically imp.traits of plants and animals , and most of these traits are characterized by genes at certain loci called the quantitative trait loci[QTL]. Characterization of chromosomal regions carrying QTL,can be applied in MAS to improved breeding efficiency. QTL and funtional genome approach are employed to understand the genome arcitecture of important traits.

In avian coccidiosis current approach of medication and vaccination is affected due to resistance EIMERIA strains.Hence the need to breed chickens resistance to diseases,is an alternative approach.Chickens show different degree of sickness after infection with EIMERIA,resistance or suspectibility to coccidiosis can be considered quantitavely inheritedd trait ,most controlled by multiple genes and here the DNA marker technologies ,QTL ,controlling the traits of intrest can be identified and use in marker assisted selection.
and disease resistance breeds can be produced.

The authors discuss basic things of genes (genomics), quantitative traits and DNA techniques.
If the marek,s disease virus out breaks than cumulative mortality will be high in broiler chickens.
Basically it is a simple article which shows that marek, s disease virus have significant losses in
broiler chickens. The comprehensive study will be required the roles of genes, QLC, and DNA in marek, s virus and coccidiosis
