Update on Ingredient Calcium Digestibility: Impact of Presence and Source of Phytate and Source of Calcium

Published: June 15, 2021
Summary
I. INTRODUCTION As we learn more about the negative impacts of calcium (Ca) on the availability of phosphorus (P) in broiler diets, it highlights how little we know about Ca requirements, digestibility of Ca in ingredients and optimal Ca to P ratios. The interactions through which Ca exerts some of its negative effects can be direct or through chelation’s with phytate and the latter h...

Dear Dr. Rosalina Angel!
You have conducted an interesting study, the results of which correspond to the conclusions.
I note that the expression standardized ileal digestibility (SIDE) of Ca is not applicable to any mineral (not only to Ca) . Digestion is the process of hydrolysis of a substrate (starch, sugars, fat, protein).
Mineral salts in the stomach are dissolved and dissociated under the action of hydrochloric acid. The resulting metal cations and anions are absorbed, that is, there is no digestion process. The term is appropriate here: accessibility. Cations and anions, getting from the stomach into the neutral environment of the intestine, interact again and if cations (Ca, Mg, Zn and other cations meet with carbonate or phosphate anions, they again turn into insoluble in chyme and inaccessible to salt absorption.
Therefore, from the point of view of the biochemistry of digestion, the process requires a different explanation.
