Russian Poultry Meat Production

The structure of the Russian Poultry Meat Production

THE DUCK, GOOSE MEAT PRODUCTION VOLUMES ARE VERY LOW DUE TO THE LACK OF MASS DEMAND FOR GOOSE AND DUCK MEAT.
Today, if we are talking about Russian poultry breeding, we can easily equate the terms of poultry meat and chicken meat production. It is broiler chicken meat that prevails. The share of alternative poultry breeding is so small that the changes in the production volumes of other poultry meat (except for chicken meat) types cannot have some serious influence on the general dynamics of this meat market segment.
For the last years Russian chicken meat market, as well as the European one, shows steady growth. At this one of the main trends of the Russian market development is the reduction of the imported products share. If in 2006 its share accounted for 45%, than in 2010 – only 20%. That is the market growth is caused by the growth of domestic production. This trend is forecasted to continue for the next 2-3 years.
In the last years our country saw the active development of turkey meat production. In 2010 the volume of turkey meat production reached 63 thous. t. The growth rates of this type of meat production are very high; indeed, 5 years ago the production volume of turkey meat was twice less. At this, it is necessary to note that the production volume of turkey meat in the households is at the same level for the last years, and the main growth is ensured only by the industrial production growth.
The share of turkey meat in the poultry meat production is a bit over 2%. The share of other types of meat is less than 1% of the total volume.

At this moment the Russian market accounts for about 500 poultry breeding enterprises producing dunghill-hen meat and by-products, which have different levels of effectiveness.
The largest dunghill-hen meat and by-products producers are:
• Prioskolie CJSC,
• Petelinskaya Ptitsefabrika CJSC,
• Ptitsefabrika Severnaya JSC,
• Chelny-Broiler JSC,
• Novo-ezdotskaya poultry plant.
The poultry meat production sphere in Russia is characterized by the presence of large, vertically oriented agricultural holdings, the structure of which, despite the production sites of dunghill-fowl meat breeding and production, includes other directions (including non-agricultural ones). These holdings include:
• Cherkizovo Group,
• Prodo Group,
• Ak Bars Holding Group,
• Agrosila Grupp Group,
• Uralbroiler Group,
• Prioskolie Group,
• Ptitsefabrika Severnaya JSC, and oth.
THERE IS A STEADY GROWTH OF DEMAND FOR THE CONVENTIONAL TYPE OF POULTRY MEAT – CHICKEN MEAT – IN RUSSIA.
Moreover, at this moment several large turkey breeding plants work in Russia:
• Evrodon LLC,
• Krasnobor CJSC,
• Zadonskaya Ptitsefabrika CJSC,
• Bashkirskiy Pticevodcheskiy Kompleks Imeni Mazhita Gafuri LLC (Bashkir poultry breeding complex named after Mazhit Gafuri),
• Egorievskaya ptitsefabrika LLC.
All the above mentioned poultry plants produce over 4.5 thous. t. of turkey meat.
The duck, goose meat production volumes are very low due to the lack of mass demand for goose and duck meat. The cases of exclusive breeding of waterfowls are really uncommon. As a rule, ducks and geese are bread as an addition to hens and broilers.
I don't think there will be sufficient changes in the structure of poultry meat production structure. There is a steady growth of demand for the conventional type of poultry meat – chicken meat – in the country. This tendency will continue in the near term. Despite this, the turkey meat production is expected to continue its growth; at this its rates will significantly overrun the same parameter of the chicken meat.

As I said, the turkey, duck, goose and guineafowl meat market is at the beginning stage of its development. There are projects implemented or being under design now but it is still early to talk about the terms of their launching and turnover periods.
Together with this, despite the current situation, Russia is at the 12th place according to the volume of turkey, duck, goose and guineafowl meat import. And Russian imports of these meat types grow steadily: for the last 5 years it increased more than twice.
