Use of Silvafeed® Nutri P to prevent enteric disorders and boost zootechnical performances in weaned piglets
Published:October 1, 2019
Summary
Background Efficient natural alternatives to antibiotics and high level of zinc oxide are urgently needed for the control of post-weaning diarrhoea in piglets. Silvafeed ® Nutri P is a blend of plant extracts rich in bioactive polyphenols, which have been extensively studied for their biological properties (e.g. antispasmodic, antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory) and potentia...
I think you should re-evaluate your statistical approach when you design your trials. With two replicates per treatment group the statistical power is almost as weak as it can be.
Presumably they were using individual pig body weights on day 42 to get their statistical results, and hence ADG was not significant if done on a pen average basis, as you suggest. Interestingly, from a veterinary perspective, the diarrhoea was occurring 4-6 weeks after weaning and not the usual 1-2 weeks after weaning (normal post-weaning diarrhoea period associated with E. coli). Were other bacterial infections involved, potentially Lawsonia, Brachyspira or even Salmonella?
David Burch, I would not consider a trial with two replicates per treatment group for statistically sound even with individual tagging. As you mave have noticed the authors have also included FI and FCR which I assume have only two observations per treatment group. IMHO these figures can be accidental as we know that the individual pen has a very big influence on animal performance.
What we usually observe in Danish herds are diarrhea two weeks post-weaning when the piglets shift from a diet with pharma zinc to the next one without. It is also rather common to see Lawsonia infections 4-6 weeks after weaning.
