Using 100% Bovine Plasma to Reduce the Impact of PRRS

Published: March 31, 2021

PRRS continues to be a devastating problem, costing the swine industry hundreds of millions of dollars annually. Reducing the impact of PRRS can require a multifaceted approach.

In a study conducted by Demeter Veterinary Services, Inc. / Groupe Cèrés, weaned pigs fed 100% bovine plasma significantly outperformed pigs fed a control diet without plasma. With today's price of 100% bovine plasma, producers can significantly increase net income.

The Role of Nursery Nutrition on PRRS Susceptibility from Raaphorst, et al., Suggests Low Complex, Plant-based Diets May Make Pigs More Susceptible to PRRS vs. High Complex, Animal Protein Diets and Highlights the Important Role Nursery Nutrition Plays in the Impact of PRRS.

From the Study:
“This study provides information regarding changes in serum antibody in pigs across different stages of production and highlights periods of vulnerability. Additionally, these findings may encourage further research into the effects of nursery diet complexity on disease susceptibility and immune response.”
