I agree 100 % using gilts instead of old sows.
If you are producing your own gilts, you need to plan ahead and breed more sows that produce gilts 11 months before you will need extra gilts.
Also to mitigate this problem need
1. Work your environment to keep cool your sows as much you can
2. Adjust lactation ration according with the consumption
3. In farrowing, feed the sows early morning and late afternoon to stimulate apatite
4. Heat check and inseminate early in the morning
5. Check your semen quality
