Professor of Animal Behaviour at the University of Oxford and has been involved in research on farm animal welfare, particularly that of poultry, for many years. She is the author of Animal Suffering: the Science of Animal Welfare (1980), Through Our Eyes Only? The Search for Animal Consciousness (1993) and Why Animals Matter: Animal Consciousness, Animal Welfare and Human Well-Being (2012). She has also co- authored (with Aubrey Manning) An Introduction to Animal Behaviour (2012). She works extensively with commercial poultry producers in the UK, Europe and the US.
