Traits. Target weights. Aiming to grow a fully grown heifer so that when she calves she is in a good position to add more value to the farmer. Currently we weigh monthly, really pay attention to detail in terms of colostrum and weaning weights. This season is the first season where the animals have had supplementary feed - maize silage + minerals as well as pasture. We have also been taking monthly herbage tests, looking at the quality of the pasture. We have noted fantastic growth rates, 2% empty rates. However we are always looking at new ways. I also sense that Dairy farmers are really looking at improving this side of their business.
