Australia - MP airs poultry litter power station concerns

A Western Australian Upper House MP has joined the debate over a proposed poultry litter fired power station at Muchea, saying he is concerned at the type of material that could be incinerated at the site. There has been speculation over the types of product that could be incinerated by the power station. The Environment Minister's conditions for the project state any fuel mix should be at least 70 per cent poultry litter, and any other component must be clean biomass. But Greens' MLC Jim Scott says he is concerned at comments by Agriculture Minister Kim Chance in Parliament, that the power station could be used to dispose of poultry feed and waste during any exotic disease outbreak. "I'm concerned that wouldn't be an effective treatment and if it was used for that purpose it did not stop the spread of that disease, it may and it may not, but you do need purpose-built facilities that are designed to handle that type of waste, not that [which] is designed for something completely different," he said.
