Laying Hen Welfare in Australia
Professor Paul Hemsworth / University Of Melbourne
 
Biography
Paul is a Raymond Barry Distinguished Professor at the Animal Welfare Science Centre, Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences, University of Melbourne. He has studied animal behaviour and welfare, particularly that of farm animals and more recently zoo animals. Recognition of scientific contribution has included the Animal Welfare Research Award by the British RSPCA (1996), David Wood-Gush Memorial Lecture, International Society for Applied Ethology (1999), Order of Australia (AM) for significant services to agricultural science and to animal welfare (2019) and the Universities Federation for Animal Welfare (UFAW) Medal for outstanding contributions to animal welfare science (2019).

Biography
Rachel A. Ankeny is Professor of History & Philosophy, and Deputy Dean Research in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Adelaide. She is an interdisciplinary teacher and scholar whose areas of expertise cross three fields: history/philosophy of science, bioethics and science policy, and food studies. She has particular interests in animal welfare and community values, including understandings of the science and ethics associated with red meat and egg production.

Biography
Dr Rebecca Forder is currently a Senior Lecturer the School of Animal and Veterinary Sciences (SAVS), The University of Adelaide, teaching anatomy, physiology and poultry production. Her research interests relate to gastrointestinal development and physiology as a means to enhance lifelong productivity of animals in intensive farming systems. Dr Forder’s interests have expanded into the area of developmental programming and how the maternal environment influences gastrointestinal development and performance of their progeny.
