USDA to require reporting of swine viruses

Summary
The USDA will require reporting of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus and Swine Delta Coronavirus to slow the spread of the diseases.
USDA is acting because of the devastating effect PEDV has had on the swine industry, said ag secretary Tom Vilsack.
PEDV and SDCV only affect pigs, pose no risk to people and aren't a food safety concern.

The reporting and tracking is going to be an enormous SNAFU. PEDv and its variants have been here since May of 2013. It of course has spread across the country without much resistance and has affected herds whose niche market is the showpig industry. Showpigs from affected herds are now scattered from Ohio to California, Georgia to Oregon. It will become a paperwork nightmare too track every 4-H and FFA project pig or confirm where and whether any spread of the disease has occurred from these animals. Mass testing at every show or everytime these pigs leave the farm or tracking of vehicles and feed sources to and from these farms will become overwhelming, impractical and probably mostly ignored.
