USDA's Food Safety & Inspection Service is requesting comments on its recent conclusions that hogs and chickens from farms identified as having purchased or otherwise received pet food scraps that contain melamine and melamine-related compounds are safe for human consumption.
The conclusion was reached based on the results of an interim safety/risk assessment which indicated that, based on currently available data and information, the consumption of pork, poultry, eggs and domestic fish products from animals inadvertently fed melamine-contaminated animal feed is very unlikely to pose a human health risk.
The agency is seeking comments specifically on whether the agency's findings are appropriate to protect public health.
All comments must be received by Aug. 28.
