A New Addition to Your Darkling Beetle Arsenal: Credo™ SC Insecticide

Published: June 11, 2008

Darkling beetles have long been a serious problem for the poultry industry – spreading disease, destroying insulation, and consuming poultry feed, which ultimately means eating away profits. Bayer Animal Health now offers a new addition to their product lineup for darkling beetle control – Credo™ SC Insecticide. This new weapon contains the active ingredient imidacloprid, effective against adult and larval darkling beetles (Alphitobius diaperinus).

Credo SC utilizes a class of chemistry new to darkling beetle control, developed by Bayer Animal Health and specifically formulated for use in poultry houses. With mounting concern that darkling beetles are becoming resistant to existing insecticides, Credo SC provides an effective new option and an active ingredient, imidacloprid, with no known resistance seen in darkling beetles. With the introduction of Credo SC, darkling beetles will be exposed to an entirely new class of insecticide.

“Credo SC is an important new product for the poultry industry, offering a new type of chemistry never seen before in the darkling beetle market,”  says V. Bruce Steward, Ph. D., Marketing Product Manager, Livestock Insecticides for Bayer Animal Health. “This product will be essential for poultry houses managing darkling beetles.”

One bottle of Credo SC will treat a 20,000 sq. ft. poultry house using band application, and a single rate is effective at killing both adult and larval darkling beetles. Specifically, it can be used in broiler houses, caged layer houses, breeder houses, and turkey houses as either a band or broadcast treatment. It can be applied to the litter, walls, support beams, and in cracks and crevices around wall insulation where beetles can hide. Credo SC can be used in a rotation with Tempo® insecticide every 3–5 flocks, delivering lasting control of darkling beetles while helping to reduce the risk of resistance development.

A single rate of Credo SC is effective and has excellent residual activity for control that lasts through the growout. Credo SC is applied at a rate of 3 fl. oz. in 1/2 to 2 gallons of water per 1,000 sq. ft. and should be used within 24 hours after mixing. Credo SC can be applied with any sprayer typically used to spray poultry houses, including backpack sprayers and vehicle-mounted spray rigs. Do not apply when birds are present and allow treated surfaces to dry before restocking or reintroducing the birds to the facility.
