Abstract
In recent years, we have seen an increased incidence of viral diseases such as Newcastle disease, avian influenza, infectious bronchitis, laryngotracheitis and reovirosis. Bacterial pathogens such as Mycoplasma gallisepticum, Mycoplasma synoviae, Clostridium perfringens and some strains of Escherichia coli remain a substantial problem. Several factors may be associated with the rise of contagious diseases. An increase in regional farm density has been shown to be one of the most significant factor. Climate change is also suspected of playing an increasing role in the incidence of certain conditions, including avian influenza. In order to face these challenges, we need to first identify the risks and assess their probability of occurrence in a given region. Then we need to communicate. Indeed, if on-farm biosecurity is essential, it is not sufficient. A regional perspective, based on the epidemiology of the diseases we wish to control, is needed.
