Todd J. Applegate was elected President of the Poultry Science Association at the recent PSA Annual Meeting, held in Corpus Christi, Texas on July 14-17, 2014.

Applegate is a professor in the Department of Animal Science at Purdue University. Since joining the faculty at Purdue, he has developed and executed a translational research program and effective communication with all segments of the poultry industry. He has provided the poultry industry with critical information and tools needed to minimize environmental impacts and maximize intestinal integrity, to sustain the competitiveness of the poultry industry in the United States and abroad through economic nutrient utilization. These efforts have been recognized with several distinctions, including three college research and extension awards, the American Feed Industry Association Poultry Nutrition Research Award, and the Maple Leaf Farms Duck Research Award.
Applegate has been an author or coauthor on 74 peer-reviewed articles, 6 book chapters, 66 conference proceedings, 128 abstracts at scientific meetings, and 19 peer-reviewed extension publications. He has mentored 6 MS and 6 PhD students as well as 10 visiting scientists or postdoctoral researchers and is serving or has served on 28 additional graduate student committees while advising 30+ undergraduates each year. Applegate has been invited to give numerous invited talks within Indiana (44) as well as nationally and internationally (90). His extension and research program has been complemented through collaborative projects with scientists in multiple states and countries. Applegate is a member of PSA and the World's Poultry Science Association and is serving or has served on multiple departmental, university, and national committees, including as director on the PSA board of directors (2006–2009), Multi-State Poultry Nutrition Conference, Revision of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers— Manure Production and Characteristics Standard, Multi-State Poultry Health and Management Schools, Digestible Amino Acid Working Group, USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service—Feed Management Within Comprehensive Nutrient Management Plans, and Midwest Poultry Consortium—Nutrition class. In addition, his participation on the leadership and writing team for the USDA regional project (S1032) has resulted in his being awarded the 2011 National Excellence in Multistate Research Award. Applegate also provides service through reviewing manuscripts for Poultry Science and The Journal of Applied Poultry Research, as well as being an ad hoc reviewer for several other scientific publications.
