Researchers Develop Novel Vaccine for Infectious Bronchitis in Poultry

Published: January 30, 2014
Source : U.S. Poultry & Egg Association news release
USPOULTRY and the USPOULTRY Foundation announce the completion of a funded research project at Auburn University regarding the development of a novel vaccine for infectious bronchitis. The project is part of the Association's comprehensive research program encompassing all phases of poultry and egg production and processing.

A brief summary of the completed project is shown below. A complete report, along with information on other Association research, may be obtained by going to USPOULTRY's website, www.uspoultry.org. The project summary is as follows:

PROJECT #F042: HETEROSUBTYPIC PROTECTION AGAINST INFECTIOUS BRONCHITIS VIRUS

(Dr. Haroldo Toro; Qingzhong Yu; V. van Santen; F.W. van Ginkel; F.J. Hoerr, Auburn University Auburn, Ala.)

Led by Dr. Haroldo Toro, a team of researchers developed a novel method for vaccinating chickens against infectious bronchitis virus (IBV). Because IBV varies widely in its makeup, flocks of chickens often have to be vaccinated with multiple serotypes of IBV vaccines.

The Auburn team, for the first time, developed technology which induces an immune response against multiple serotypes of IBV without having to use multiple vaccine serotypes. This novel vaccine research has the potential to revolutionize IBV prevention in both the broiler and layer industries.

Vector vaccine technology solved great problems of many diseases world wide or at least in my area (middle east) like ILT, ND as both ILT & ND expressed by only one serotype, so it succeeded. But IB still great problem & it is difficult to broad protection against different serotypes at the time IB virus has great affinity to mutate & gives other new serotypes to threat poultry industry & till now there is difficulty to insert more than one serotype in one vector virus, so i think it is good idea to use S2 gene but still important to try challenge with other serotypes to be sure that S2 is capable to express all IB serotypes

Bronchitis in Poultry is the infectious disease that destroys whole the farm , this mostly its good to use broncho-dilators therapy is characterized primarily by respiratory signs. Infection with may also lead to kidney problems (nephritis) and problems with egg production and egg quality in laying and breeder hens.
