HYDERABAD- The fear of bird flu has come back to haunt the poultry industry in Andhra Pradesh. With avian influenza being confirmed in Agartala in Tripura, the poultry industry in AP, which is the biggest in the country, has been put on high alert.
"We have asked poultry farmers to report any unusual and large-scale deaths so as to take the necessary measures to confirm if there is any outbreak of bird flu here," said Dr Y Thirupathaiah, additional director, planning, directorate of animal husbandry.
In 2006, bird flu fear led to losses worth crores of rupees in the state as poultry birds had to be culled in large numbers and eggs were also destroyed.
In case of any signs of bird flu in the state, the serum samples will have to be sent to the High Security Animal Disease Laboratory (HSADL), Bhopal for confirmation of the virus.
According to Thirupathaiah, all poultry farmers have been educated on the bio-security measures to be taken to tackle any eventuality.
The staff of the animal husbandry department are also doing the rounds of poultry farms to detect any signs of the virus and are collecting blood samples. Though this happens on a regular basis, with the news from Agartala about the outbreak of bird flu, officials are on guard.
Nearly two-thirds of the poultry production of the country is contributed by Andhra Pradesh which is the reason for the caution.
After 2 consecutive economical losses to Poultry Industry due to AI fever( facts and rumours) had taught a lot to people .Now industry is well organized in past 5 -6 yeras of span and everybody is aware of the importance of BIOSECURITY measures. Any unusual sign and mortality will be reported to the concern.
But i hereby request you all that the news related with the suspected mortality should not be communicated to media till get the confirmation on disease from laboratory side else those news/forthright statements flipped through news channels will create the panic situation in the general public without knowing the actual fact and the benefits of the same are pulled off by others and producers are become in financial crunch.
Please Organize together for the well being of Industry where each and every person who directly or indirectly involved should be benefited without any losses to our Society and human health.
"Big pay and little responsibility are circumstances seldon found together"
We should not panic at this hour, rather we should strictly adhere to the right management practices, like bio-security, vaccination, proper monitoring of the farm, and any unusual mortality should be reported immediately to the concern.
constant monitoring of poultry flocks for any unusual mortality and immediate postmortem examination will help to identify the probable cause. Strict and sound bio security measures to be adopted to prevent not only the AI but also other diseases
Dr. P.Srinivasan Associate professor PDDSL, Namakkal
Adopting best possible Bio-security measures and being constantly on alert would be the best option under the circumstances.
